Privacy Policy

Cleartext is built to keep translation private. We minimize data collection and do not store translation history by default.

We store no translation retention

Translation text is processed to return results, then discarded.

Settings, keys and caches live locally; we store minimum data only.

Opt-in sharing only

Data sharing is only opt-in for Community plan.

1. Scope

This Privacy Policy applies to the Cleartext browser extension, web app, API, and related services (the “Service”).

2. Information we collect

We collect only what we need to provide and secure the Service:

Account data. Email address, user ID, and plan.
Billing data. Subscription status and Stripe customer IDs. We do not store full card numbers.
Usage data. Daily counts such as pages, characters, and token usage for limits and billing.
Device data. Device name, identifier, token hash, and last-used timestamps.
Technical data. IP address, user agent, and standard security logs.

3. Translation content

When you translate, the text you select or page content is sent to translation providers to generate results. If you use Cleartext routing, your text passes through our servers for processing and provider dispatch. We do not store translation content in our databases.

If you are on the Community plan and explicitly opt in, we may share limited translation content with OpenAI to help improve model quality. This is disabled by default and can be turned off in settings.

If you use your own API key, translation requests are sent directly to the provider from your device.

4. How we use information

Provide, maintain, and secure the Service.
Enforce plan limits and calculate usage.
Process billing, refunds, and subscriptions.
Respond to support requests and account inquiries.
Improve performance, reliability, and routing quality.

6. Your choices

Use your own API keys to avoid routing through Cleartext servers.
Manage auto-translate and language preferences in the extension settings.
Opt in or out of any data sharing features if available to your plan.

7. Security

We use reasonable technical and organizational measures to protect your data. No system is 100% secure.

8. Data retention

We retain account, billing, and usage data while your account is active and as needed for compliance. Translation content is not retained by default.

9. International transfers

Your data may be processed in countries where we or our providers operate.

10. Children’s privacy

The Service is not directed to children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect their data.

11. Changes

We may update this policy from time to time. We will update the “Last updated” date above.
